Shooting Champs Emerge at NWTF's Turkey Shoot

FORSYTH, Ga. — The only thing hotter than the temperature in Forsyth, Ga., Aug. 20 to Aug. 22, were the world-class sporting clays shooters that participated in the National Wild Turkey Federation's 17th annual Turkey Shoot at the Meadows National Gun Club.

More than 420 sporting clays enthusiasts competed in the NWTF's 17th annual Turkey Shoot, Aug. 20 to Aug. 22, at the Meadows National Gun Club in Forsyth, Ga.
More than 420 shooters in 10 divisions put on a spectacular display of shooting prowess by breaking thousands of clay targets while braving temperatures that exceeded 100 degrees on the heat index.

Brandon Powell, a shooting phenom from Carlton, Ga., emerged as Turkey Shoot's hottest of hot shots when he was crowned champion in the prestigious National Sporting Clays Association (NSCA) Main Event. Powell broke an impressive 191 of 200 targets over two days and bested Scott Jones in a shoot-off to win the title.

"I've been runner-up at Turkey Shoot several times so it's a great feeling to finally win something I've tried so hard for," said Powell. "I always get excited about coming to Turkey Shoot because it's a fun, relaxed competition where you meet tons of great people and win cool prizes."

Known to many shooters as "golf with a shotgun," sporting clays is a form of clay pigeon shooting in which clay targets are thrown at a variety of speeds, distances and trajectories to simulate hunting scenarios. Turkey Shoot is one of the largest sporting clays events in the country. If the more than 132,250 targets that were launched during this year's competition were stacked, the targets would stretch more than a mile into the sky.

Brandon Powell from Carlton, Ga., took home the title of NSCA Main Event Champion by breaking 191 of 200 targets over two days of competition.
"You'd be amazed at the number of people who attend Turkey Shoot with no idea what sporting clays shooting is all about," said Rhett Simmons, NWTF director of special events. "After trying it for the first time, many men, women and youth become hooked. It's a fantastic place to learn how to become a great shooter because novice shooters are grouped alongside some of the best and most famous shotgun shooters in the world."
