Dick Kirby, Founder of Quaker Boy Game Calls
Yesterday, September 31, 2010, the outdoor industry lost one of its most valuable and well respected friends, Dick Kirby.  As a person that loved to hunt, fish, trap, and do anything related to the outdoors, he loved it second only to his family.  As an amazing family man, friend, sportsman, and mentor, Dick Kirby made a mark on the outdoor industry that will forever be remembered.

Dick was always willing to listen and share stories, no matter if they ended in success or not.  He was a steadfast supporter of passing on the tradition of the outdoors and sportsmanship to not only the younger generation, but anyone that was interested.  This was evident through the time he spent sharing his knowledge through countless seminars, articles, videos and television shows.  He was always helping others move forward toward greater success, and there is no better example of this than his son, Chris, an amazing sportsman who now proudly directs Quaker Boy into the future with the same beliefs that his father instilled in him, and started the company with back in 1970.

From all of us here at TurkeyHunting247.com; the Kirby family is in our prayers.  We all believe that Dick is now set up on a great roost waiting for flydown.  He's in a place where the season is always open, the birds aren't call shy, and they never get hung up ... God bless you, Dick, and thanks for everything.

A Little History Behind Dick Kirby and Quaker Boy Game Calls ...

Quaker Boy, Inc. started as a hobby in the home of Mr. & Mrs. Richard C. Kirby. A barber and a beautician by trade, Richard (Dick) and Beverly had an extreme love of the outdoors. A demand for Dick Kirby's call creations and business opportunity led them to start "Quaker Boy Game Calls".  The company is privately held with Mr. & Mrs. Kirby being the principal owners. They have both remained as Quaker Boy's chief operating officers to this day. The company name comes from Dick and Beverly's hair shop, known while in existence, as Quaker Boy Barber Shop and Quaker Girl Beauty Shop.  The name originated from the "Quaker" settlement of Orchard Park on Quaker Rd. in Orchard Park, New York.

Building turkey calls is what started Quaker Boy. This is the reason for the original name "Quaker Boy Turkey Calls". The company added many other types of game calls and hunting accessories. The fast growing business incorporated in 1981. Today the company is known as "Quaker Boy, Inc."

The game call industry was in its infancy when the Kirby's started. They were overwhelmed by the "giant" game call manufacturers of the time. Dick realized, in his words that, "the opportunity was there, and we went for it!" The business began with Dick and Beverly working hand in hand with one common goal, to provide today's sportsman with the highest quality, user friendly and innovative equipment ever. Quaker Boy began with just a few employees, with each serving many job functions. Eventually, Dick and Beverly outgrew the many additions on their home to accommodate the growing business. The decision was made to build a 13,400 sq. ft. facility on Webster Rd. in Orchard Park, NY. Further growth required Quaker Boy, Inc. to start and run a full-time woodworking shop in Bradford, PA which encompasses another 13,000 sq. ft.

Surrounding themselves with men and women of integrity that shared the same passion for the outdoors, Dick and Beverly have applied unparallel innovation and quality to the game call market.
